Texas House Democrats Depart State to Block Republican Redistricting Proposal

Democrats in the Texas House of Representatives left the state on Sunday, which halted their Republican counterparts from voting on a newly redrawn Congressional district map.

By leaving the state, Democrats can “prevent the Texas House of Representatives from reaching the quorum required to vote this week.” This was reported by New York Times. The Texas House was expected to conduct a “floor debate” on the redistricting plan.

This Democratic exodus coincides with an ongoing “mid-term rezoning conflict” in Texas, as noted by the publication.

This departure marks a significant escalation in the intense partisan conflicts over redistricting in Texas, which has been pushed by former President Trump. Texas Republicans are moving swiftly, having crafted a map that aims to overturn five Democratic Congressional districts and secure two committees over the weekend.

A discussion on the map and a potential vote in the full House was anticipated for Monday.

The withdrawal of Texas Democrats signifies the “second act of the Second Act” since 2021, according to Politics.

Since 2021, if the Capitol doesn’t have enough lawmakers to conduct business, it disrupts their second law. This situation arises as a response to aggressive actions occurring in Texas.

Reports indicate that Texas Democrats headed to Illinois on Sunday.

“Any Texas Democrat trying to run away like a coward should be found, arrested, and brought back to the Capitol immediately,” Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton stated in a post on X.

Texas House Democrats issued a statement denouncing Republican leaders for exploiting the recent devastation caused by floods, which claimed “more than 130 Texans,” as “political cover.” They expressed, “For two weeks, families in the hills have grieved the loss of over 130 Texans in the devastating floods, yet Democrats are striving to safeguard Congress’s foremost priorities. In contrast, Governor Abbott and Republican leaders have utilized this tragedy for political advantage.”

Moreover, Texas House Democrats accused former President Trump of “turning victims of the tragedy into political hostages.” The statement concluded, “We will not permit disaster relief to be held hostage by Trump’s gerrymandering efforts.”
