Texas Man Facing Charges for Illegal Abortion After Discreetly Supplying Medication to Pregnant Woman

Grand Jury Indicts Texas Man for Supplying Abortion Pills

CONROE, Texas — A man in Montgomery County is facing charges for allegedly providing abortion pills to women without their knowledge, resulting in the termination of their pregnancies. If found guilty, he could face life imprisonment due to Texas’ new abortion law.

This week, Montgomery County District Attorney Mike Hawley announced that John Reuben Demeter, 25, has been indicted for unlawfully performing an abortion and causing injury to a child. He is accused of mixing crushed abortion pills into drinks he gave to women. Reportedly, Demeter ordered these pills online and had them shipped to a local address.

“This is likely the first instance that this law has been invoked in Texas for such a case,” Hawley mentioned while addressing the media about the legal implications.

Montgomery County Sheriff Wesley Doolittle confirmed that Demeter was arrested on February 23, following an incident where a woman sought medical care on February 21. She claimed that she had received abortion-inducing drugs without her consent.

Authorities identified the fetus as Presley Mae, noting that the woman was 14 weeks pregnant at the time of the procedure.

A defense attorney, not affiliated with the case, described the situation as raising “unique legal issues,” highlighting the complex nature of the allegations.

“Essentially, this case can be interpreted as an assault, involving serious harm or death to an unborn child without the individual’s consent or knowledge,” the attorney explained.

Demeter is scheduled to appear next in the 221st District Court in Conroe on Thursday. Under Texas law, illegal abortion is classified as a first-degree felony, carrying a potential sentence ranging from five years to life if convicted.
