Texas man pretended to be a minor online in order to track down sex offender and left him dead in a ditch, police say

Man pretends to be underage online to track down sex offender shoot him dead According to Texas State Police.

Court documents show 24-year-old James Lewis Spencer III made statements to the effect that he would take action against pedophiles if police failed to deliver justice.

Spencer is accused of killing Sean Connery Showers, 37, in May.

Showers admitted to possessing child pornography when he was 23 years old. He failed to register as a sex offender and was subsequently arrested in 2018 for enrolling at Bellaire High School without reporting to school during regular work hours.

Andy Kahan of Crime Stoppers said he served two years for the crime and was released in 2021.

Investigators say Spencer contacted Showers in May, posing as a minor, and got him to agree to meet for sex. Instead, Spencer allegedly shot Showers several times as she walked near her home. The man’s body was found in a ditch.

Kahan believes someone may have tipped off police about Spencer’s alleged involvement.

“A person who knew the defendant tipped off investigators and told them that the defendant was the type of man who would do bad things to young children and wanted to rob and harm young children,” Kahan said. “He knew how to track them using apps on his phone.”

A judge set Spencer’s bail at $250,000, and he remains in the Harris County Jail. If convicted, he could face life in prison.

“You’re here on a first-degree felony charge of murder,” the judge told Spencer.

Kahan says he has never seen an incident like this. he is not thinking Spencer was justified in killing Showers even though he intended to reoffend.

“The only time I’ve seen anything like this is in movies,” Kayhan said. “The first thing that came to mind was Charles Bronson from Death Wish or Bernard Goetz, the vigilante killer.”
