Texas Man Charged with Capital Murder in Roadway Shooting

A man from Texas, identified as Jeremy Porter, has been charged with capital murder related to a tragic shooting incident that left a 5-year-old girl dead over the weekend, local authorities reported.

Porter, who is 47, was apprehended and is currently held at the Harris County Jail in Houston. Investigators were able to link him to the shooting of Zah’Layah Walter thanks to evidence, including data from automated license plate readers. Remarkably, he was captured less than a day after the incident, according to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez.

The fatal shooting took place on Saturday night in northwest Harris County. Zah’Layah was in a car with her mother, Monica Hicks, and her four siblings when gunfire erupted. The sheriff’s office shared that the bullets struck the family’s vehicle, resulting in Zah’Layah’s death.

Hicks shared her ordeal with a local news outlet, stating that they were returning home from her mother’s place. She described a horrifying scene, where her children were screaming as the shooting commenced. “I didn’t even realize my daughter was hit until I parked the car at our apartment,” she recounted.

The investigation into the tragic event is still active, with authorities committing to finding justice for Zah’Layah and supporting her grieving family. It’s been stated that, moving forward, the sheriff’s office will do everything possible to ensure the responsible parties are held to account.
