Texas Task Force Discovers Capital Murder Suspect Concealed Near U.S.-Mexico Border

Arrest of Suspect in Capital Murder Case

A group of law enforcement officers from the Fugitive Task Force has successfully apprehended a suspect linked to a capital murder case. John Chancey III was found hiding in Eagle Pass, Texas, which is over 400 miles away from the murder location in Fayette County, Texas.

The Eagle Pass Police Department reported that Chancey was discovered in a neighborhood south of the city, which has seen numerous illegal border crossings lately. He was wanted by U.S. Marshals for his alleged involvement in a murder near La Grange, Texas.

This operation was carried out by a collaboration of local, state, and federal officers from the U.S. Marshals Service’s Lone Star Fugitive Task Force. Chancey now faces serious charges, including capital murder with a terroristic threat, abuse of a corpse without lawful authority, and assault on a public servant.

Members of the task force included officers from various agencies, such as the U.S. Marshals Service, Texas Department of Public Safety, Eagle Pass Police Department, and Uvalde Police Department.

Uvalde Police Chief Homer Delgado expressed pride in Chancey’s arrest, saying, “I am extremely proud that our officers not only work every day to keep Uvalde safe, but also stand ready to help our neighboring communities by taking violent criminals off the streets. That’s what true service looks like: protecting ourselves while supporting those around us.”

According to Texas law, a capital murder charge can be applied when a murder involves a peace officer or firefighter, the victim is under 10 years old, or the act occurs during the commission of another felony, among other criteria.
