Texas Woman Sentenced for Church Arson

A woman from Texas has received a six-year prison sentence for her involvement in a 2023 arson attack on a church in Washington, as federal prosecutors reported.

Natasha Marie Odell, 38, was sentenced on three felony charges related to the fire at the Seattle Rustian Lutheran Church in Snohomish County. Earlier this year, Odell pleaded guilty to charges including arson, damage to religious property, and obstruction of a person’s religious beliefs.

During the sentencing, US District Judge Jamal Whitehead described the incident as “devastating and dangerous.” He noted that Odell deliberately set the church ablaze, resulting in its total destruction.

Despite the damage, some of the church’s security footage survived and showed Odell handling a red gas container around the premises. In the video, she was seen pouring gasoline and using a lighter to ignite the flame.

Odell was visiting family on August 25, 2023, when she committed the act. Investigators linked her to the fire using cell phone records, credit card transactions, and surveillance footage. Notably, she had purchased lighters and gasoline shortly before the incident.

The judge has yet to determine the amount of restitution Odell will owe. The fire resulted in over $3.2 million in damages, including costs incurred from renting a nearby junior high school for church services.

In a statement, Attorney Thiel Lucy Miller emphasized the recklessness of Odell’s actions, explaining how they endangered not only churchgoers but also firefighters responding to the blaze. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported, but a firefighter did sustain minor injuries while combating the flames.
