"That's Unlikely to Occur": Jonathan Turley Provides a Reality Check on Demands from Democrats

Impact of Trump’s ICE Operations Changes

Jonathan Turley, a law professor at George Washington University, mentioned on Monday that President Donald Trump’s decision to end U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activities in cities such as Los Angeles could undermine the Democrats’ ambitions for an alternative approach to immigration enforcement.

Following some unrest in Los Angeles related to ICE activities, various cities have begun to call for an end to these operations in the area as a means to “restore order.” Turley remarked that such a retreat is unlikely to occur.

“The president has authority over federal officials. While they may not always be in active roles, the federal government has significant power to enforce its laws,” Turley said during his appearance on “American Report” with Sandra Smith. He noted that some Democratic leaders had suggested a federal withdrawal from cities like Los Angeles, but he doubted that would come to pass.

Turley further explained that if a city declares itself a sanctuary and neither obstructs nor aids enforcement, that might lead to a stronger federal presence to counterbalance those decisions. He highlighted recent remarks from city council members who urged the LAPD to develop a system to alert residents about federal activities and enforcement.

In a related incident, a mob targeted an ICE facility in Portland, Oregon, coinciding with scheduled operations on that day.

Additionally, a video surfaced showing an individual, later identified by the FBI as Elpido Reyna, participating in violent confrontations with law enforcement during the protests. The FBI has offered a reward for information leading to Reyna’s arrest.

Opposition to ICE operations is not limited to protests; it also allegedly includes judicial figures in Milwaukee who provided assistance to undocumented individuals during immigration enforcement efforts, as well as Nashville’s Democratic Mayor Freddie O’Connell, who has made known the identity of an ICE agent involved in local immigration enforcement.
