Pollution Levels in U.S. Cities

A new study has shed light on pollution across American cities, examining both air quality and waste management, and how these factors impact the health and well-being of residents.

The research conducted by LawnStarter evaluated over 300 major cities in the United States, using data from various government agencies, including the Environmental Protection Agency and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Findings from the study were categorized into four areas: pollution levels, living conditions, waste infrastructure, and overall resident satisfaction. Each city received a score out of 100, with a higher score indicating poorer conditions.

New York City avoided the top ten, but nearby Newark, New Jersey, known as the sixth borough of NYC, came in sixth with a score of 48.06. Notably, Newark ranked third in terms of resident dissatisfaction.

In California, San Bernardino and Los Angeles took the top two spots. Ontario, situated between these two cities, was noted for its significant pollution issues as well.

San Bernardino was rated the dirtiest city for the second consecutive year, largely due to poor air quality and littered streets. A staggering 75% of residents expressed dissatisfaction with the pollution in their city.

Overall, California dominated the list of cities rated poorly for air quality, with nine cities placing among the worst for median air conditions.

Detroit also faced considerable pollution challenges, ranking high due to issues like a significant smoking population of around 24% and inadequate waste management.

While residents may have little control over air and water quality, one significant issue they can influence is littering. According to a national survey, an estimated 35 billion pieces of waste are found outside proper disposal bins, with cigarette butts being the leading offender.

The disposal of e-cigarettes is also becoming a growing concern, with an estimated 500,000 devices discarded each day. This rapid increase poses ecological risks due to their toxic components.

A representative from an e-cigarette retailer remarked on the hazardous nature of these discarded devices. Many individuals are unaware of the environmental harm caused by improper disposal.

He cautioned that simply throwing e-cigarettes in regular trash can create fire hazards and release toxic substances into the environment as they break down.

Therefore, it’s crucial that used vape devices are taken to hazardous waste sites instead of being thrown away carelessly.
