During an appearance on ABC’s “This Week,” Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) expressed uncertainty about President Donald Trump’s goals regarding Iran. This lack of clarity seems to be concerning for the outgoing North Carolina Republican.
A brief transcription highlights parts of the discussion:
Karl: Let’s talk about Iran. How do you view the situation now, three weeks in? What’s the main aim?
Tillis: Honestly, I’m not sure, and that’s a significant issue. The president has communicated well with Venezuela about their objectives. They’ve effectively pushed Maduro out. I think there’s lingering uncertainty about whether that administration will sustain a long-term alliance with the U.S. or if the president will achieve his broader intentions. Overall, it appears to be moving in the right direction. As you might recall, the first airstrike some time ago was—
Karl: Last summer.
Tillis: —quite successful. I can see why we need to finish some tasks and revisit the field, occasionally for one to two weeks, to notably diminish their capacity. However, that’s rather vague. I’m unclear about our long-term strategic objectives, but it’s crucial we clarify them. I largely support the president’s approach with Iran, but for us to obtain the additional $200 billion request, we will require 60 votes and must determine how to achieve that.
Karl: They indicate it will take four to five weeks to tackle it again, but for what reason, I’m not quite sure—
Tillis: Exactly.
Karl: —but $200 billion doesn’t seem to align with four or five weeks.
Tillis: No, it doesn’t. I calculated that it’s estimated to range between $1 billion and $1.5 billion daily. So if we assume around $30 billion has already been spent to sustain operations, personnel, and conduct attacks, we really need to understand how that funding will be allocated. If operations extend beyond 60 days, we should seriously consider authorization for military force and long-term funding strategies. We have to examine the requirements involved, analyze what’s included, and seek Democratic support.
