The Hidden Cost of Same-Sex Marriage: Children at Risk

A decade ago, a significant injustice was inflicted upon children. In the landmark case of Obergefell vs. Hodges, the Supreme Court equated same-sex marriage with traditional marriage. However, these two forms of marriage cannot be seen as equal when it comes to the needs of children. One allows children to have both biological parents, while the other may result in a separation from one or both parents.

Many warned that legalizing gay marriage would harm children’s rights. When the definition of marriage changed to be more inclusive of same-sex couples, the traditional understanding of parenthood was also impacted. If husbands and wives can be optional, the roles of mothers and fathers can also be disregarded.

Redefining Family and Ignoring Children

Since 2015, there has been a push among activists to redefine family structures further, often sidelining the essential roles of mothers and fathers. The push for equality has led to the notion of “social parents,” which includes adults who may not even be related to the child and often haven’t undergone careful vetting. Birth certificates now frequently reflect only “two moms” or “two dads,” erasing the identities of biological parents. Some have even called for government funding to aid in creating families without fathers and mothers, which seems to overlook the biological and emotional needs of children.

Once again, when politicians speak on this topic, it’s rare to hear the phrase “Every child deserves a mother and father” as it was commonly expressed a decade ago. Reports show that this sentiment has nearly vanished from political discourse.

Shifts in Culture and Education

The Supreme Court’s ruling didn’t just change laws; it transformed societal norms, particularly affecting children. Educational systems have also adjusted to reflect this shift. Before 2015, formal teaching resources still referred to “mothers” and “fathers.” In recent years, however, these terms have slowly been erased. Instead, educators are encouraged to use more neutral language like “family” or “compassionate adults.”

The absence of traditional parenting terminology in classrooms signals just how much cultural expectations have evolved. Publishers have also picked up on this, as sales of LGBTQ-themed literature have surged, indicating a growing acceptance and normalization of these themes.

Today, many children are confronting a narrative that obscures the importance of having both a mother and a father, suggesting that any familial structure is equally valid. However, this overlooks what many believe children inherently desire: the love and support of their biological parents.

A Cautionary Reflection

Some support for same-sex marriage stemmed from a well-meaning desire to love and accept LGBTQ individuals. Yet, a decade later, it seems the outcome isn’t as rosy as once thought. To state it plainly, the push for same-sex marriage has not fostered more love for LGBTQ individuals; it has negatively impacted children.

The consequences of redefining marriage are far-reaching. What was once viewed as progressive may actually come at a cost to the very children it sought to uplift. Looking back at historical legal decisions, it’s evident that they profoundly shaped societal structures. The recent shift in marriage laws risks repeating past mistakes.

Currently, there is a rising coalition of individuals, including Christians, conservatives, and even some LGBTQ parents, who aim to reclaim the institution of marriage. They believe that children, as the most vulnerable members of society, should not continue to pay the price of these legal and cultural changes.
