WASHINGTON — The IRS is warning taxpayers they could be leaving more than $1 billion behind.

Federal tax collectors announced Monday that about 940,000 Americans have until May 17 to file tax returns for unclaimed refunds for 2020, totaling more than $1 billion nationwide.

The average median refund in 2020 is $932. The states with the most people potentially eligible for these refunds are Texas (93,400), California (88,200), Florida (53,200), and New York (50,000). 1,400 people).
