The key US cities Trump might focus on for National Guard deployments in 2026

In 2025, one of President Donald Trump’s more contentious decisions was to mobilize the National Guard in major U.S. cities for security around federal buildings and during law enforcement activities, including deportations. While some welcomed this move, it faced significant backlash in areas with “sanctuary” laws that safeguard immigrants from federal enforcement. In some cases, Trump opted to federalize the National Guard, circumventing Democratic governors by sending troops from Republican-led states to Democrat-leaning cities.

This deployment included major cities such as Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, Chicago, Memphis, and New Orleans. Residents in these areas could continue to see National Guard presence through 2026.

Chicago

Despite a Supreme Court ruling just before Christmas that halted immediate National Guard deployment in Chicago, the Trump administration asserted that it would tirelessly work to ensure public safety. White House Press Secretary Abigail Jackson stated that the President is committed to enforcing immigration laws and protecting federal employees, emphasizing that this ruling does not diminish their objectives. The administration plans to pursue authorization for National Guard assistance in Chicago as legal battles persist.

St. Louis

Trump indicated a connection between Memphis and St. Louis when he announced the National Guard’s intervention in Memphis, suggesting that assistance could soon extend to St. Louis. He highlighted both cities as suffering from high crime rates that overwhelm local law enforcement, citing data from the FBI that place St. Louis among the highest for violent crime in the country.

New York

In an August address, Trump mentioned the federal government’s takeover of Washington, D.C., while suggesting that intervention in New York might also be needed, referencing its challenges. He planned to visit New York and expressed hope for local efforts to improve conditions. Yet, with the election of socialist mayor Zoran Mamdani, Trump warned that federal action might be necessary if crime levels continue to rise under his administration.

Baltimore

Trump also stated that he would send the National Guard to Baltimore if requested by Governor Wes Moore, who previously extended an invitation for collaboration on public safety. Trump criticized Moore’s handling of crime but maintained he would offer federal help if absolutely necessary, pointing out the city’s troubling criminal statistics.

California Cities

California’s leadership has largely opposed Trump’s strategies, particularly the deployment of the National Guard during riots. Despite criticism, Trump reiterated his plans to send the National Guard not just to Los Angeles, but also to Oakland and San Francisco, citing serious crime issues in those areas and expressing determination to address them. He pointed out the Democrats’ failures in these cities, emphasizing a commitment to restoring order.
