The Last Dance review – Chinese funeral business is backdrop for arresting, life-affirming drama | Movies

SWhat begins as a light-hearted comedy about wedding planner Dominic (Hong Kong stand-up icon Dayo Wong) transitioning into funeral work suddenly takes a dark turn in The Last Dance. Dominic takes on a seemingly incompetent client who has been turned down by all of his competitors. The client wanted her young son to be embalmed. Dominic realizes that he has been dead for six months, as a string of rotting substances hangs from the boy's back as he is being dressed. This is not the only scene in the funeral parlor. Nor is the unsettling realism that writer-director Anselm Chan uses to stabilize this well-constructed, punchy melodrama.

Dominic is bequeathed a job as a funeral director by his girlfriend's retired uncle, and his new business partner is Master Man (Michael Hui), a broken Taoist monk who performs rituals to “break through the gates of hell” to free souls. have to face it. Unimpressed by the commercially minded newcomers, the veteran was interested in flashy gimmicks and commissioned a paper Maserati for the funeral of someone who had died in a car accident. However, it becomes clear that Mann's traditionalism masks his own sadness and leads to his ruthless treatment of those around him.

As Dominic grew accustomed to the job, he realized that the two were complementary. “The Taoist monk transcends the souls of the dead. The agent transcends the souls of the living.” And just as the main character cheers up the dead, Chan infuses the melodrama with spontaneity. I am good at It's not only full of eerie contrasts, but also twists and turns as we patiently watch Dominic transform into a caring mortician in a series of carefully written consultations. As masterfully played by Wong, his sly grin hides an inner strength, and Hui matches him with a casually angry demeanor.

There are moments of awkward plot suturing. It seems impossible for a man who is second to none to finally admit that everything was wrong. However, Chan sticks to the landing. This is the climax in which Mann's daughter, Yuet (Michelle Wai), who has been suppressed by outdated sexism, comes to the fore. Amazing morbidity, life-affirming Bonmotsconfident, dramatic patterns, refreshing universality. All of this could potentially render The Last Dance prime remake material.

The Last Dance will be released in UK and Irish cinemas from November 15th, and in Australian cinemas from December 5th.
