Nancy Grace Critiques Alex Murdaugh’s Retrial: “Section 2 is the Same as Section 1”

Former prosecutor Nancy Grace has shared her thoughts on Alex Murdaugh’s upcoming retrial in Beaufort, South Carolina. This follows the overturning of his murder conviction. She’s curious about the likely change of venue and examines the defense’s approach, which seems to involve presenting a new narrative. This will include requests for fresh DNA testing linked to the fingernails of Maggie Murdaugh.

In another development, a South Carolina judge has held crime reporter and podcaster Mandy Matney in civil contempt. He ruled that Matney willfully disregarded a subpoena in a case relating to the Murdaugh family, imposing $171,500 in attorney fees and a $5,000 fine.

Judge R. Keith Kelly released a 22-page order stating that Matney purposefully ignored a legitimate subpoena and a prior order to appear for a deposition. The judge dismissed her claims that safety concerns justified her noncompliance.

This contempt ruling is connected to a longstanding civil lawsuit tied to a tragic 2019 boating accident that claimed the life of Mallory Beach. One of the defendants in this case is Parker’s Convenience Store, accused of selling alcohol to underage Paul Murdaugh before the crash. Matney was called as a non-party witness.

Murdaugh Murder Retrial May Uncover Sealed Court Records

Beach, who was 19 at the time, died in a February 2019 incident in Beaufort County. Paul Murdaugh faced charges for boating under the influence, but those charges were dismissed after he and his mother, Maggie, were killed on their family property in June 2021.

The Beach family is suing both the Murdaugh and Parker families, alleging the convenience store illegally provided alcohol to the underage Paul Murdaugh before the incident. This lawsuit has played a pivotal role in exposing Alex Murdaugh’s financial misconduct during investigations.

Kelly noted that Matney failed to show up for a deposition scheduled for March 27, despite understanding the court had rejected attempts to cancel the subpoena. Instead, she participated via Zoom from a different location while the opposing attorney waited for her at another site.

Murdaugh’s Jury Investigation and Court Clerk Scandal

The judge highlighted that Matney had posted about dining and socializing on social media after skipping the deposition. This, he stated, indicated her intention to disregard her obligation to attend.

Initially, Parker’s attorneys requested over $310,000 in fees and costs, but the judge ultimately reduced the award to $171,500 alongside the $5,000 fine.

Matney expressed her frustration about the ruling in a Facebook post, stating she wasn’t upset about the contempt finding itself but rather about the hefty financial penalty imposed. “South Carolina’s judicial system is exactly what I’ve been saying all along: it’s corrupt,” she said, adding that this was her retribution for speaking out.

Judge Kelly concluded that there was no reliable evidence supporting Matney’s claims of harassment by Parker’s attorneys. He suggested that if she had attended the deposition or accepted one of the alternative locations offered, she wouldn’t have faced the contempt motion in court.
