The Media Focus on Mamdani's Meeting is Due to His Uniqueness

Trump Discusses Meeting with New York City Mayor-elect Mamdani

President Donald Trump mentioned on Friday that his recent meeting with New York City Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani, a self-identified democratic socialist, is garnering more media coverage than some state visits from foreign leaders. He suggested that Mamdani is “different” and noted how the press has taken a keen interest in this unique situation.

During their meeting in the Oval Office, Trump commented, “the press has been preying on this,” referencing the unexpected attention Mamdani’s position is receiving compared to more traditional foreign dignitaries.

When asked why this situation seems to excite him more, Trump offered, “I think he’s different, so, well… that can be in a very positive way. He’s not like your typical candidate who might get elected and not do much; he has the potential to make significant changes for New York.”

A substantial number of reporters were present, capturing the moment and directing questions at both Trump and the mayor-elect.

Trump highlighted how Mamdani quickly gained traction during the Democratic primary “suddenly coming out of nowhere.” He emphasized the critical state of New York and the necessity for federal assistance, stating, “We’re going to support him.” He added that Mamdani is not your average candidate, alluding to the impressive speed at which his campaign developed.

Trump reminisced about watching Mamdani’s support soar during the primaries: “I looked and said, ‘Who is this guy?’ He went from one to three, then five, then nine, and I thought, ‘That’s kind of funny, isn’t it?’ Then he won a primary that no one expected him to.” He described Mamdani’s accomplishments as remarkable.

Mamdani shared that both he and the president admired a portrait of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the only president to serve four terms. The conversation about Roosevelt’s New Deal led Mamdani to reflect on how federal and city governments could work together to foster change and affordability.

Notably, Mamdani requested a photograph with the FDR portrait, which Trump had taken out for display after it had been stored away for years. The president noted, “He’s a Democrat… and the mayor looked at the portrait and asked, ‘Sir, may I have a picture taken with that portrait?'”

Mamdani confirmed, expressing his admiration, while Trump concluded, “I hope the photo comes out well, but it’s a great portrait in the Cabinet room. So I guess he’s a big fan of the New Deal and FDR.”
