Summer is still in full swing, and with fall not quite around the corner yet, it’s time to reach for some ice-cold beer instead of wine.
This season, I’ve been enjoying Kölsch, which I find to be one of the most versatile beers out there. It pairs surprisingly well with lighter cocktails, like that grape transfusion thing. Just a bit of history: Kölsch hails from Cologne, Germany, and while it gained popularity in the 1800s, it actually traces back to the 17th century, when local laws limited brewing to pale ales.
I appreciate a good, affordable beer without the pretentious vibe. Honestly, just give me a light beer with a lemon wedge, a cigar, and a birdie on the 18th hole, and I’m set. But, every so often, you might want to mix it up a bit beyond your go-to domestic brands, maybe even go beyond just the standard Mexican lagers. It’s nice, too, if you’re taking someone special to a craft brewery—a fantastic date idea—and need a solid choice in case she can’t make up her mind.
If it’s been a while since you’ve tried craft beer, Kölsch is a great starting point. My favorite part? It’s a bit higher in alcohol content than light beers but lacks the dry, bitter kick you get from IPAs. With those, even just a couple can lead to a headache the next morning and a parched throat.
In contrast, a Kölsch provides that nice buzz without the hangover that often follows hoppy beers. It’s smooth and flavorful, making it an excellent choice to feature at events like weddings—it has a bit of everything: taste, smoothness, and a moderate alcohol content. Not planning a wedding anytime soon? No worries; it’s still perfect for enjoying with friends during a weekend barbecue.
