The NHL's equivalent of the 'Bobby Bonilla deal' has finally come to an end.

The unique saga of Shea Weber’s lengthy contract has finally reached its end. The now-retired defenseman’s infamous deal with the Nashville Predators, signed back in 2012, concluded recently after 14 years. Weber, who has been out of the NHL for five years, was also inducted into the Hall of Fame three years ago, all while still cashing checks from that contract.

This agreement originated during the 2012 free agency period. At that time, Weber was the 26-year-old captain of the Predators and one of the league’s top young defensemen, negotiating a long-term extension as he approached restricted free agency.

Eventually, he signed with the Philadelphia Flyers, who were in a tough spot. With the legendary Chris Pronger dealing with injuries and considering retirement, they felt a significant void in their defensive lineup. The Flyers, aiming to maintain a playoff-worthy roster, decided to take a bold step by extending a 14-year, $110 million offer sheet to Weber, which they believed was too steep for the Predators to match. The hope was that adding Weber would bolster their chances for a Stanley Cup run.

Surprisingly, Nashville opted to accept the offer. While the Predators were a solid team, they needed to maintain some salary cap flexibility to adjust their roster, but, in this case, they fully committed to Weber, which had both merits and limitations for the team.

Fast forward to 2016, when the Predators still held the rights to Weber’s lengthy contract. They made headlines by trading him along with PK Subban to the Montreal Canadiens, in a significant deal swapping two top defensemen. However, a couple of years later, Weber faced multiple injuries and began to decline, ultimately retiring from the NHL in 2021 at the age of 35.

But wait! His contract was guaranteed through 2026, transforming it into an unusual asset. Following his retirement, Weber was traded to the Arizona Coyotes in 2022 and later to the Blackhawks in 2025, all to help free up salary for other contracts. Although he had no plans to return to the ice, his remaining contract made him a valuable piece in deals.

This complex scenario leaves Weber with $1 million for the 2023-24 season, $200,000 for 2024-25, and another $1 million in 2025-26. Now that it’s all wrapped up, let’s raise a glass to Shea Weber’s remarkable contract saga.
