Satirical news publisher The Onion announced Thursday that it has acquired conspiracy theorist Alex Jones' website Infowars in a bankruptcy auction.
“Ultimately, the decision to acquire infowars It was a no-brainer for Global Tetrahedron's executive committee,” said Bryce P. Tetraeder, CEO of The Onion. said in a statement.
Jones' Infowars business was put up for auction after a bankruptcy trustee moved to shut down the site and liquidate its assets.
Jones is a far-right conspiracy theorist who spread baseless lies about the victims and their families of the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. The auction was intended to help pay a $1.5 billion judgment awarded to the family.
In a statement to The Onion, Tetrader said Infowars has established itself as a “valuable tool for brainwashing and controlling the public.”
Tetrader criticized Infowars' “unwavering commitment to creating anger and radicalizing society's most vulnerable.”
As for what happens next for Infowars, Tetrader said it will become clear “in due course.”
“For now, let us rejoice in this victory and toast to the continued consolidation of power and capital,” he wrote.
