Food Security Concerns in Gaza
According to Israeli sources referencing internal data about humanitarian efforts, the only individuals confirmed to be suffering from starvation in Gaza are Israeli hostages currently held by Hamas.
While food security is indeed a concern, over the past week, more than 23,000 tons of aid have been delivered to Gaza via 1,200 trucks. The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), which receives support from the US and operates with private security, reported reaching over 100 million meals delivered by the end of May. However, much of the aid organized by the UN was reportedly confiscated by Hamas and other armed groups for personal gain.
Claims from the Hamas-run Gaza Ministry of Health suggest that several Palestinian children have succumbed to malnutrition. Still, this agency is often criticized for fabricating information regarding Palestinian casualties, which raises questions about its reliability.
Images shared in mainstream media, intended to depict starving Palestinian children, have actually shown children with other medical conditions. In one notable incident, a Palestinian child featured in such a photo was flown to Italy for medical care with assistance from Israel.
In contrast, Hamas has shown no hesitation in releasing a video of an Israeli hostage appearing to be starving, using such content to exert pressure on the Israeli government and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for concessions to the terrorist group.
The Israeli government has publicly rejected claims of hunger in Gaza, attributing food insecurity to issues related to the UN’s handling of aid, which often results in Hamas controlling or restricting what reaches the population.
