Some years ago, the late Pope Francis remarked that the Catholic Church ventured “to the edge of the earth” in its search for a new pope. On Thursday, after a dynamic and engaging discussion, the most diverse Conclave in history chose a successor from the heart of the superpower.
This moment is particularly striking for some Americans. Chicago-born Robert Prevost, now named Pope Leo XIV, is seen as a strong progressive response to the current global climate. Having spent two decades in one of Peru’s poorest areas, his selection reflects a shift in the Church’s stance, especially noticeable alongside the contentious backdrop of Donald Trump’s agenda. Prevost’s social media activity suggests he shares Francis’s critical view of the Trump administration’s controversial immigration policies.
As nationalism rises and threatens collective responses to pressing issues like migration and climate change, the Cardinals chose a pope who could counteract these trends, much like Francis. By adopting the name of Leo XIII, a pope known for prioritizing social justice in the late 19th century, Prevost sends a significant message to a world now dealing with the challenges of the Trump era.
Within the Church, traditionalists may hope for a return to stricter, more hierarchical practices. However, it seems the new Pope, while more moderate, will likely maintain the reformative direction set by his predecessor. As seen in his previous role selecting bishops, he has echoed Francis’s call for a more humble administrative approach. His opening address in St. Peter’s Square indicated a continued commitment to fostering congregational participation.
For women in the Church, this could mean further advancements in influence after some improvements made under the previous pope. Yet, tension remains amid ongoing divisions, especially concerning the ordination of women. Pope Leo may face pressure to expedite what he has referred to as a “slow process” of expanding women’s roles. Although he supports blessings for same-sex unions, previous condemnations of “gender ideology” may create concern among those who appreciated Francis’s inclusive stance towards LGBTQ+ individuals.
Progressive Catholics will closely observe how quickly Pope Leo is willing to address these issues, particularly regarding administrative responses to sexual abuse. There were fears that the Conclave might select a conservative figure, but instead, they chose someone who appears to continue Francis’s compassionate and progressive vision. This is promising news, especially in a world grappling with power rivalries and suffering due to war and inequality.
