Generation Alpha Trend Takes America by Storm
The “6-7” trend has become a sensation across the U.S., affecting everyone from parents to teachers to casual pedestrians. It’s gained so much traction that Dictionary.com has named it the Word of the Year for 2025.
Dr. Steve Johnson, who leads lexicography at IXL Learning’s Dictionary Media Group, commented on the phenomenon, stating, “Few slang terms capture the cultural mood of 2025 better than ‘6 7.’” He elaborated that this isn’t just a meme; it serves as a social signal and a form of expression. When people use it, they’re conveying a shared sentiment, creating a sense of community even before everyone agrees on its meaning.
The meme, which stems from rapper Skrilla’s song “Doot Doot (6 7),” was popularized further by Charlotte Hornets player LaMelo Ball, who used it to reference his own height. This combination of music and sports culture encapsulates how modern slang connects various generations.
According to Dictionary.com, the term blends digital humor and intergenerational creativity, making it resonate strongly with today’s youth. In fact, they reported that in October 2025, the term “6 7” appeared six times more often in digital conversations than it did in the previous year.
Interestingly, the organization acknowledged that even they are uncertain about the exact meaning of the term, which is pronounced “six-seven,” not “sixty-seven.” This uncertainty has not distracted from its popularity—parents and teachers have been baffled by its prevalence among teenagers.
But “6 7” isn’t alone; several other words also made it into the dictionary updates this year. Among them is “aura farming,” which refers to the intentional cultivation of one’s personal style for online attention. The term “Gen Z stare,” describing a blank or indifferent expression often seen in younger generations, also features on this list.
Other noteworthy additions include terms like “trade wife,” “agentic,” “overtourism,” and “tariff.” These words reflect the evolving landscape of language as influenced by digital culture and social dynamics.
