Celebrating the Squonk: A Unique Festival in Pennsylvania

This Saturday, Pennsylvania’s quirky, fictional creature, the Squonk, will take the spotlight at Squonkapalooza. It’s a festival that draws people from all over the country to celebrate these mythical beings and bring a little joy into their lives.

Lisa Russell and Joe Fogle, the festival’s organizers, describe the Squonk as “the saddest folk creature.” Apparently, it has loose skin and warts, and its closest relatives are wild boars and pigs. Russell, who dons the Squonk mascot costume, adds a whimsical detail about its anatomy—two webbed feet, but only on the left side.

According to the folklore, the Squonk is said to reside in the Hemlock Forest in the Keystone state, with origins traced back to 1910 in a book called “The Fearful Creatures of Lumberwoods.” Fogle shares how the Squonk represents something more relatable than legends like Bigfoot or Mothman, evoking feelings of sadness and pity, yet inspiring a desire to uplift it as one would a friend or neighbor.

This year’s Squonkapalooza marks the third celebration of its kind, hosted at the Bottleworks Ethnic Arts Center in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. The event welcomes attendees of all ages, which is nice.

People come from various places to join in the festivities. Russell notes, “Some come from the West Coast, East Coast, and beyond. We even have some vendors who travel from out of state.” Reflecting on her own journey, she mentions living in Washington, Colorado, and now Illinois before getting involved with the festival.

The festival features various activities, including a tribute contest designed to gather a good vibe and positive energy. Participants can craft simple messages of appreciation, like saying, “I love your Squonk,” to uplift the spirit of this beloved creature.
