DHS Clarifies DACA Recipients’ Legal Status

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has made its position clear regarding the legal status of individuals covered under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which was created by former President Barack Obama.

In comments provided to Blaze News, the DHS stated that DACA does not convey legal status and that recipients may face deportation. They pointed out that the Deferred Action program does not legally protect those who received pardons. This follows incidents where some DACA recipients mistakenly traveled to Mexico and subsequently claimed they had lost protection.

A quoted statement highlights the precarious situation DACA recipients find themselves in: “DACA recipients are under heavy microscopes to be perfect, or risk overturning their lives as they are forced to live in a country they barely know.”

Originally introduced through an executive order in 2012, the DACA program has faced criticism, particularly from right-leaning groups who argue that Obama overstepped his authority and violated constitutional mandates.

While President Trump had previously hinted at possibly not enforcing deportations on “dreamers,” a term often used to describe DACA recipients, this recent statement from the DHS signals a likely shift towards enforcement.

Valerie Sigamani, a lawyer and former DACA recipient, expressed her concerns in an email to Blaze News. She noted that the program hinders the freedom of individuals who have grown up in the U.S. “We hope that this administration and all future administrations understand that DACA recipients are some of the best members of our society,” she added. “They risk being forced to live in a country that they hardly know.”

The Trump administration is anticipated to intensify deportation efforts following proposed legislation that includes funding for immigration enforcement.

Sigamani concluded by emphasizing the value of DACA recipients in society, stating, “Those who have shown commitment to this country are gems and should not be devalued just because they weren’t born here.” She stressed that assurance of safety for DACA recipients remains critically inadequate.
