Hamas and the Pursuit of Peace

On Friday, Hamas seemed to accept the peace framework introduced last week by former President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, raising hopes for an end to the ongoing violence that began two years ago.

Many believe this could pave the way for lasting peace, not just in Gaza, but across the Middle East. However, even if that’s true, the trauma inflicted on the Jewish community from the events of October 7, which ignited the conflict, is something that can’t be easily forgotten. The shadows of anti-Semitism linger, affecting Jewish communities for the long haul.

At 6:30 that morning, as many Israelis were still asleep, rockets from Gaza lit up the southern Israeli skies. A large number of Hamas operatives and civilians surged across the border, targeting innocent people at music festivals and in small communities.

This attack didn’t really come out of nowhere. Hamas seemed intent on provoking a large-scale conflict aimed at dismantling Israel, even obstructing a potential peace agreement between Israel and Saudi Arabia.

The brutality of that day was staggering. Reports emerged of unimaginable horrors: terrorists committing acts of violence against men, women, and children. Just try to picture it—infants brutalized, young people shot down at gatherings meant for peace, entire families wiped out.

Over 1,200 lives were lost that day, with 251 people taken hostage—the most devastating day for Jews since the Holocaust. Currently, there remain about 48 hostages, including 28 individuals whose fates hang in the balance.

Yet, this nightmare only marked the beginning. Almost immediately, a wave of anti-Jewish sentiment swept through various parts of the globe.

Just a day after the attack, on October 8, while Israeli forces were still gearing up to respond, demonstrations erupted. Some politicians in the U.S. began to shift blame, directing their outrage towards Israel.

Protests in Times Square organized by certain factions emphasized the Palestinian cause, with some openly supporting Hamas. Anti-Israel rallies have erupted across numerous cities and campuses, leading to harassment and violence aimed at Jews. It’s reminiscent of past dark times, where authorities either turned a blind eye or downplayed such threats.

Calls for recognizing Palestine and condemning Israel grew louder, often intertwined with calls for violence. Some leaders, like Zohran Mamdani, failed to denounce these extremist tones, which is rather disconcerting, especially given his standing in the upcoming New York mayoral elections.

The situation has led many in the Jewish community to feel increasingly uneasy, even in America, traditionally seen as a refuge.

There were even demands from various sectors of society for Israel to halt operations, diverting attention from the hostages who remain unaccounted for.

The International Criminal Court has issued dubious warrants against Netanyahu and former defense minister Joab Gallant, with global leaders falsely accusing Israel of genocide.

To add insult to injury, many countries, including the UK, France, and Canada, have shifted their stance, recognizing a Palestinian state while seemingly rewarding Hamas’s heinous acts.

President Joe Biden, who initially reiterated unwavering support for Israel, soon found himself advocating for restraint, impacting U.S. military assistance to the Jewish state.

Last Thursday, a tragic incident unfolded on Yom Kippur in Manchester, England, where terrorists attacked attendees at a synagogue, resulting in fatalities and severe injuries.

Later that day, anti-Semitic rhetoric surfaced during “Pro-Palestinian” rallies across the UK.

The hostility from Hamas towards the Jewish community illustrates a harsh reality, underscoring the necessity of a robust Israeli state to safeguard its people.

If we’re fortunate, Trump’s proposed plans could ultimately bring some semblance of peace to the region. However, the scars of trauma and the collective pain endured by Jews over recent years are likely to linger for quite some time.
