For nearly 40 years, the identity of a woman known only as “Jane Doe” remained a mystery. It has now been uncovered that she was 28-year-old Mama Marina Ramos, who was tragically found fatally stabbed in the Mojave Desert, Arizona, on December 12, 1989.
At the time of her death, authorities had no idea who she was.
Two days later, her daughters, Jasmine and Elizabeth Ramos, aged two and 14 months respectively, were discovered abandoned in a toilet at a California park. This led to years of confusion for law enforcement, until the case picked up steam again in February 2022. Investigators ultimately linked Ramos’ identity to fingerprints collected during a shoplifting arrest in Bakersfield, California, back in June 1989.
Subsequent DNA tests on her family revealed a significant match with one of her daughters.
“I’ve been searching for so long for this, and I really want to know where I came from and who my family is,” said Jasmine, who now goes by Tina.
Tina and Elizabeth, who has been adopting the name Melissa, were informed of this shocking development by Investigator Lori Miller from the Sheriff’s Office.
“When she introduced herself as a murder investigator, I felt she had more information about my parents,” Elizabeth recalled. “I just ran through the room, overwhelmed, not knowing how to process the news.”
Jasmine remembered the moment she learned about her mother’s tragic fate in 1989. “It’s hard to put into words the emotions that have surfaced after all these years,” she said. “Finding out the truth is both a relief and, well, it makes you think.”
As of now, the investigation still hasn’t led to identifying the perpetrator of Marina Ramos’ murder.
The Sheriff’s Office made a statement saying, “While we’re pleased to have resolved some aspects of this 36-year-old case, the search for the person responsible for Marina Ramos’ death is ongoing.” Witnesses indicated they saw two men of Hispanic descent with the girls shortly before they were discovered in the restroom.
