In Texas, a thief stole nearly $2,000 worth of emergency medication from a terminally ill boy’s wheelchair at the State Fair, before a kind-hearted stranger stepped in to assist in replacing the crucial meds.
Single mother Kayla Price was at the Dallas fair with her children on October 6, when her purse—which contained two doses of medication essential for stopping her 3-year-old son Devin Cervantes’ seizures, as well as $1,500 in cash—was taken. Devin, who is fighting terminal brain cancer, relies on these medications.
“The thought of my son having a seizure without that medication is just… it’s really distressing,” Price shared with Fox 4 on October 8. “Someone’s careless act could cost us everything, and that really hurts. I’d do anything for my baby.”
Price had taken her kids for a long-awaited trip to the fair, a week before it concluded for the year, since Devin had been feeling okay. Unfortunately, her purse was swiped from her son’s wheelchair while she was momentarily distracted by her older son.
The nasal spray in her bag was critical for Devin’s seizures, and she mentioned that insurance would not cover its replacement.
Price reached out to the Dallas police to report the theft, and she also made an emotional appeal for the thief to return her belongings.
“I truly hope you can find it in your heart to give everything back,” she expressed to Fox 4. “You don’t understand the pain you’ve caused me and my children. Just return it all.”
Devin, battling stage 4 terminal brain cancer, is currently in hospice care. His mother explained that he has gone through six chemotherapy treatments and 45 rounds of radiation, but the tumor continues to grow.
Price has described her son as a joyful child who loves to dance and is a fan of Spider-Man and SpongeBob SquarePants.
“Even with everything happening, Devin remains the happiest little boy,” she noted in a GoFundMe appeal.
Things took a turn for the worse when Devin underwent a prolonged seizure on October 9, prompting Price to urgently seek out the medication that was stolen, as reported by NBC 5.
But relief came in the form of Chris Bailey, a Dallas resident who manages the Everybody Love Everybody Facebook group. Upon learning of the theft, he generously donated $2,000 to help the family afford the vital medication.
“I sent her the money yesterday, and she went straight to the pharmacy to fill it,” Bailey recounted.
Price expressed her gratitude, saying, “That medicine gives me a few more days, maybe even weeks, hopefully, and I’m so thankful.”
Bailey mentioned that he looks forward to meeting Devin and has another surprise in store for him as a little early Christmas gift.
