Streaming Services and Subscriptions: A Personal Perspective

These days, the market for streaming subscription services feels overwhelming. It’s hard to keep track of them all, whether you’re into binge-watching your favorite shows or listening to music. Options abound, and it can get a bit monotonous.

I’m a big fan of music streaming, particularly of the two platforms I use daily: Apple Music (Family Plan) and Spotify Premium (individual ad-free plan).

You might wonder why I subscribe to both when they largely offer the same kind of service. Well, let me break it down for you.

Unlocking Benefits with Apple Music and Chase Sapphire Reserve

Recently, I was thrilled to find that my Chase Sapphire Reserve® renewal came with free Apple TV+ and Apple Music subscriptions. These are valued at up to $250 a year, and this deal lasts until June 22, 2027.

It feels like my Sapphire Reserve has given me two subscriptions for the price of one, covering most of Apple Music’s costs. But there’s a little catch; I’ll get to that.

I’ve been loyal to Apple Music for years, but when it comes to Spotify, I have a habit of switching back and forth from the free version (I know, I know—don’t judge me, Spotify fans).

That was my story until I stumbled upon a three-month ad-free trial for Spotify last year. Fast forward to now, I find myself paying for both subscriptions because, let’s face it, nothing ruins a good song like an ad interrupting the flow. Once I explored the Premium Plan’s benefits, including 15 hours of ad-free audiobook listening, I was sold on keeping Spotify.

Here’s where Apple Music falls a bit short for me: accessing audiobooks means opening the Apple Books app, whereas Spotify brings my music, audiobooks, and podcasts all into one space. So, when the trial ended, I happily decided Spotify Premium was worth every penny.

Important Notes for Current Sapphire Reserve Cardholders

The caveat I mentioned is particularly relevant for folks who already own the Sapphire Reserve. If you’ve had the card for almost two years like I have, you won’t see updates on benefits or rates until after October 26th.

If your Sapphire Reserve came after June 23rd of this year, congratulations—you’ll have immediate access to the card’s benefits.

Exploring Other Streaming Services and Credit Card Options

If you’re considering options for streaming credits that can offset subscription costs, keep in mind that the Sapphire Reserve isn’t the only contender.

If annual fees are a concern for you, I recommend taking a look at the American Express Blue Cash Preferred® Card. It features a much lower $95 annual fee compared to the Sapphire Reserve’s $795. Plus, with 6% cashback on U.S. supermarkets (up to $6,000 annually) and U.S. streaming services, it has a lot to offer.

On top of that, you can earn up to $120 in Disney streaming statement credits each year—$10 a month, provided you register and qualify for automatic renewal.

Looking for a credit card that rewards streaming purchases? The Capital One Savor Cash Rewards card could be a solid fit. It gives you 3% cashback on popular streaming services and 1% on everything else. The best part? There are no caps on the cashback you can earn.

If you crave premium options with good streaming benefits, the American Express Platinum Card offers up to $240 in digital entertainment credits each year—$20 per month for subscriptions like Disney+ and Peacock (registration required).

Final Thoughts

For months, I contemplated whether to cut back on my Spotify Premium to save some money, but I just couldn’t give up the seamless access to audiobooks and podcasts.

Now, my Sapphire Reserve has turned into a lifestyle credit card, providing plenty of perks and serving as a great travel card too. I don’t have to choose between them—I enjoy the free Apple Music subscription and still keep my Spotify Premium without the hassle of double payment.
