This Week in Crypto Games: Gala Ends ‘Walking Dead’, ‘Flappy Bird’ Leaves Crypto – Decrypt

As the world of crypto gaming continues to evolve, new titles are emerging, airdrops are happening, and market conditions are ever-changing. It’s quite a lot to take in.

That’s where we come in. If you’re keen on keeping up with the latest happenings in the Crypto Video Games realm, this weekly roundup offers a snapshot of some of the biggest developments from the past week, along with other compelling snippets from the industry.

Top Stories

The Walking Dead Games Closure: Gala Games recently announced that its multiplayer survival game, The Walking Dead: Empires, will shut down on July 31st. The game featured Ethereum NFTs, allowing players to buy assets like weapons and land.

To make up for this, GALA plans to distribute NFTs from other games to present holders, promising features that match those of the original. However, some users are voicing concerns on social media regarding the potential value of their assets. The PC version had been in open beta for roughly a year.

Flappy Bird Goes Crypto Lite: The iconic mobile game Flappy Bird has made its debut on Android’s Epic Games store, yet it strangely lacks any crypto-related elements, despite earlier talks about a token linked to its Telegram version. This new launch sticks to the classic tap controls while introducing quest modes supported by ads and in-app purchases.

Following a rocky reception for the Telegram version last year, which was ultimately pulled in April, the community seems unsure about a crypto-based Flappy Bird. After the recent Android launch, the Telegram Channel stated, “The Flappy Bird brand belongs to the community.”

Maplestory N’s Launch: Nexon has rolled out Maplestory N, integrating blockchain elements into this beloved 2D side-scrolling adventure. This game operates on a dedicated avalanche L1 chain called “Henesys,” allowing players to possess and trade in-game items.

The Maplestory franchise, boasting 250 million users globally, saw its PC version serve as the first title in the Maplestory Universe Ecosystem, shifting from a polygon framework to an avalanche framework recently.

Sui Gaming Stablecoin Announcement: Playtron is gearing up to launch Game Dollar, a specialized stablecoin aimed at gamers on the SUI blockchain, expected in late 2024. This token will facilitate purchases, subscriptions, and rewards across Playtron’s Gameos ecosystem, which includes the upcoming Suiplay0X1 handheld console.

This stablecoin, distinct from traditional ones, will be programmable at the use case level and will have backing from short-term U.S. Treasury instruments, motivating specific user activities. Playtron’s CEO, Kirt McMaster, mentioned that this programmable aspect could open doors for innovative economic models for developers.
