California Governors’ Debate Held
On Wednesday, the first significant televised debate for candidates running for California governor took place, organized by Nexstar Media Group. The event featured key contenders, including Democrats Xavier Becerra, Katie Porter, Tom Steyer, and Matt Mahan, as well as Republicans Chad Bianco and Steve Hilton.
After tuning in, a host noted that some Democratic candidates seem so underwhelming that even Gavin Newsom, often seen as one of America’s most progressive governors, appears competent in comparison. She sighed and remarked, “As dark as things seem, he looks like a rock star against the backdrop of the Democrats striving for his position.” This wasn’t really a compliment to Newsom; it was more of a commentary on the perceived shortcomings of his challengers.
In the latest episode of “Sara Gonzales Unfiltered,” she highlighted three main points from the debate.
The candidates discussed an executive order from President Trump regarding trucking regulations, which emphasizes English proficiency for commercial truck and bus drivers. Signed back in April 2025, the order seeks to enhance road safety by tightening enforcement of driver’s license rules for nonresidents and improving background checks.
As expected, three out of four Democratic senators expressed strong disapproval of the policy. Becerra labeled it “reckless,” Porter declared her unwavering commitment to oppose the Trump administration’s initiatives, and Steyer even drew a parallel between the need for English comprehension and “racial profiling.” This prompted a chuckle from Sara, who found the reactions to common sense safety policies absurd.
“Honestly, if someone comes here from Norway or Sweden and can’t speak English, I just don’t care,” she quipped in response to Steyer. Regarding Porter’s assertion to “protect Californians,” she mused, “I think people are more concerned about being safe on the road, not worrying about being run over by a trucker who can’t read signs.”
She ended that segment with a light jab about food in California, stating, “Good food just isn’t a thing here anymore, thanks to the Democrats.”
Later in the debate, the candidates were asked to rate Newsom’s approach to the state’s homelessness issue. The Republicans assigned him an “F,” while Democrats were somewhat more lenient, giving him three “B” grades and one “A.” “Homelessness is a massive problem in California, anyone who’s been there knows that,” Sara pointed out.
The highlight for her came when Porter was questioned about a viral video showcasing her harsh treatment of staff members, where she could be heard saying, “Get out of my shot!” Porter’s immediate response was, “I apologized to that staff member on that day four years ago.”
Ultimately, Sara emphasized the urgency for the Republican Party to reclaim the governorship in California. “It’s really dire,” she stated. “This could be your last shot, Republicans. If you don’t take it back now, the opportunity may vanish.”
