Three people die in a tragic climbing accident at a popular national park

Tragic Climbing Accident in North Cascade National Park

Over the weekend, a climbing accident in North Cascade National Park resulted in the deaths of three climbers from Renton, Washington.

Officials from the Okanogan County Sheriff’s Office and the local Search and Rescue Service responded to a call about the incident near a northern winter spire, approximately 16 miles west of Mazama, Washington, around 11:30 a.m. on Sunday.

According to the sheriff’s office, a group of four climbers was descending a steep gully when they experienced a fall.

Upon arrival, responders discovered that three members of the party had died.

The deceased were identified as aged 36, 47, and 63, as stated by the Okanogan County Coroner’s Office.

Fortunately, the fourth climber had managed to separate from the group and contacted law enforcement regarding the incident.

A helicopter rescue team from Snohomish County assisted in retrieving the three deceased climbers from the rugged terrain.

A preliminary investigation suggests that the accident resulted from a failure of an anchor while the climbers were rappelling down the steep slope. However, further inquiries are ongoing.

The National Park Service did not respond immediately to requests for comments on this situation.

The sheriff’s office expressed gratitude to the volunteers and the helicopter crew for their efforts in what they called a “tragic incident.”

They extended their thoughts and condolences to the families and friends of those involved.
