Secret Service Officials on Leave Amid Internal Investigation
Three officials from the United States Secret Service, including their spokesman, have reportedly been placed on administrative leave and have had their security clearances revoked during an internal investigation concerning alleged misconduct related to leaks.
These individuals are thought to be part of the agency’s communications office, and among them is Director of Communications Anthony Guglielmi, based on multiple reports from Wednesday.
“Three non-law enforcement personnel at the U.S. Secret Service have been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation into potential misconduct,” a spokesperson mentioned in a statement. “As per policy, this incident is being investigated by the Office of Professional Responsibility. We are unable to provide further comments at this time.”
“The U.S. Secret Service is dedicated to maintaining the utmost professionalism and integrity as we carry out our crucial mission of protecting the President and other high-ranking officials,” the spokesperson added. “Our work requires an unwavering commitment to duty, honesty, and courage in all job facets.”
A representative for Guglielmi, attorney Gregg Bernstein from Maryland, stated to a news outlet that the communications director “is a person of deep integrity whose decades-long public record advocating for local, state, and federal agencies speaks for itself.”
“He holds great respect for the mission and work of the United States Secret Service and is fully cooperating with all inquiries,” Bernstein commented.
In recent months, the administration of President Donald Trump has faced several significant leaks of sensitive information that could potentially lead to security risks. For instance, Trump criticized reports from earlier this year that indicated he had to use a different aircraft due to safety reasons when leaving Turkey after the NATO summit, as opposed to using his newly-gifted Qatari Air Force One plane.
Guglielmi has also been a key communications figure during some of the most challenging times in Trump’s presidency and campaign, such as the first assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, in 2024. There, a man managed to fire a bullet that struck Trump’s ear, resulting in the death of an audience member seated nearby and subsequently leading to the resignation of the agency’s director following contentious congressional hearings.
The USSS highlights Guglielmi’s extensive experience, having previously served as the chief communications officer for various regions, including Fairfax County, Virginia; Chicago; and Baltimore. “In his current role, he oversees all dimensions of media relations, employee, and strategic communications for the nation’s premier federal law enforcement agency,” the Secret Service notes.
