Shooting Spree in Austin Results in Multiple Injuries
Three individuals are now in custody following a weekend shooting spree in Austin, Texas, which left four people wounded.
During a press conference on Sunday, the Austin Police Chief, Lisa Davis, revealed that two male juveniles, aged 15 and 17, were detained in connection with the incidents. A third juvenile, a 16-year-old male, had initially managed to escape but was found and arrested later that evening.
“These are dangerous kids out causing havoc in this city and they had to be taken into custody, and they were safely,” Davis remarked.
Chief Davis explained that the series of violent acts began when the 15-year-old suspect stole a firearm from a local gun store on Saturday. The older juvenile was already wanted for a prior theft at the same location.
This theft ignited a spree that lasted into Sunday, involving shots fired in 12 distinct incidents across the city. The suspects targeted various places, including homes, apartment complexes, and even two fire stations.
“A firetruck was struck while the fire personnel were right behind that truck,” Davis added.
Robert Luckritz, the Chief of Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services, confirmed that four individuals were injured during the chaos—one sustaining critical injuries while the others had non-life-threatening wounds.
Davis described the crime wave as particularly complicated, highlighting a mix of active shootings and several stolen vehicles, with multiple civilian casualties reported.
“We had two individuals at this point that were going and robbing cars and then started firing shots at people,” she noted.
In light of the random nature of these attacks, law enforcement conducted welfare checks door-to-door in targeted neighborhoods to ensure residents were safe. As the investigation unfolds, a clear motive for the violence remains elusive.
“I don’t know what motive would drive anybody to come and drive around senselessly in this city, in multiple parts of this city, shooting,” Davis said.
Among the incidents described, there was a drive-by shooting in front of a store, and one man was shot in the back while he was walking his dog. A shelter-in-place alert was issued for south Austin before the suspects were captured.
“These kids are serial criminals with a callous disregard for life. If they are ever released from jail they will surely harm again,” cautioned Governor Greg Abbott. He commended the efforts of Austin PD, the Travis County Sheriff’s Office, and the Department of Public Safety.
