Tom Homan: Democrats Misrepresent ICE Facility Conditions

Tom Homan, the border czar, challenged allegations regarding inhumane conditions at ICE facilities in New Jersey. He claimed that “Democratic politicians have been lying” about issues like hunger strikes and mistreatment. After visiting the various facilities, Homan noted that they were well-maintained and even tried the same meals as the detainees to assess food quality.

Meanwhile, the Trump administration is set to establish a new immigration detention center near Alexandria International Airport in Louisiana. This 528-bed facility is aimed at streamlining the deportation process for families and unaccompanied minors.

Being close to the airport, it is supposed to help immigration officials manage undocumented immigrants and unaccompanied children as they prepare for their departures. ICE has characterized this new location as more of a “way point” rather than a true detention center, indicating that migrants would be held for only a few days at most.

New York State Police Take Legal Action Against ICE

A spokesperson from the Department of Homeland Security stated, “England Airpark serves as a deportation transit facility,” where individuals await deportation flights. While officials behind the facility describe it as a “humanitarian effort” for families seeking voluntary deportation, some immigration advocates argue that families often feel pressured into leaving or lack a clear understanding of their options.

Last year alone, over 4,400 immigration flights were recorded leaving from Alexandria International Airport, underscoring the facility’s strategic location. ICE documents specify that families housed at the site “are in the legal custody of ICE” and can only be released as directed by ICE. Interestingly, contractors have been told to avoid terms like prisoners or detainees when referring to families at this location.

Furthermore, ICE has instructed that the transportation of families should not involve bars or cages, as the facility is designed to not require headcounts. Families can also wear their own clothes.

Unaccompanied children, however, are usually not placed in such facilities. They are instead taken to nationally licensed shelters or foster programs managed by the Department of Health and Human Services, which won’t operate this new center.

This soon-to-open facility, which will be run by LaSalle Corrections’ nonprofit branch, is expected to be operational next month. As a representative from Airports England mentioned, “These are people who are willing to return home voluntarily, and they are returning in family units.” A contract for the facility was signed recently, and it is located on a former military base.

Court of Appeals Decision on Immigration Detention

ICE describes this new establishment as a sort of 72-hour holding center for individuals awaiting deportation, operating under LaSalle Corrections, which manages several facilities across the South. Recent reports indicate issues with conditions in LaSalle-run facilities, including two detainee deaths and violations of health and safety standards at the Winn Correctional Center.
