On January 3, Deobra Redden, a convicted felon with a long history of violent crimes, appeared before Mary Kay in Las Vegas District Court for sentencing on a charge of attempted assault with great bodily injury. – Standing before Judge Holthus. KSNV TV reported.

“I'm not a bad person, I'm not a bad person. I'm not excusing my actions, but I know I'm not a bad person and I never intended to kill Mary Kay Holthus. I know I was concerned about her health.”

Mr. Holthus indicated that he did not agree to a request from Mr. Redden's attorney to keep Mr. Redden out of jail, at which time Mr. Redden taunted Mr. Holthus, ran into the courtroom, and jumped over the judge. Physically attacked. A man next to the judge and court staff both tried to restrain Redden and subdue him, KSNV said, adding that multiple punches were thrown at Redden. The alarm was activated and Holthus stood up several minutes later, police said, and officers removed her from the courtroom.

A week later, Redden again appeared before Holthus, who sentenced him to up to four years in prison, completing a trial cut short due to Redden's attack.

What happened next?

Redden, who pleaded guilty in September to attempted murder charges related to the assault on the judge, suffered from mental illness, KLAS reported.

The department announced that during Redden's sentencing hearing on Tuesday, prosecutors read the following statement from Judge Holthus: “He made a conscious decision to kill me and made every effort to succeed. Had he had his way, he would have faced life in prison without the possibility of parole for murder. It will be.”

Redden tried to convince District Court Judge Susan Johnson that she was not trying to kill Holthus.

“I'm not a bad person, I'm not a bad person,” Redden told the judge, according to KLAS. “I'm not excusing my actions, but I want to say that I'm not a bad person. I know I didn't mean to kill Mary Kay Holthus. I wanted to protect her well-being. I know you cared.”

Redden's pleas were not enough. Johnson sentenced Redden to 26 to 65 years in prison, the department said.

“This was not just retaliation or an attack on Judge Holthus,” Johnson said, according to KLAS. “This was also an attack on the judiciary.”

Johnson added that doctors who examined Redden determined that he knew the difference between “right and wrong,” the agency said.

KLAS said that given credit for time served, Redden will be eligible for parole in the 2050s.
