Tim Kennedy, a former Army Green Beret who transitioned to UFC fighting, is currently recovering in the United States after being injured in an ambush last month in the Democratic Republic of Congo that resulted in numerous casualties.
At 47 years old, Kennedy is receiving care at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. He had a conversation with Rep. Derrick Van Orden (R-Wis.), who expressed his relief in a message on social media, saying, “I just spoke to my dear friend @TimKennedyMMA. That means he is not dead and that means I am thankful.”
Van Orden, a former Navy SEAL, urged everyone to pray for Kennedy’s recovery and for his family to find peace. He humorously noted that Kennedy’s injury did not alter his stance on the Army-Navy rivalry, adding, “GO NAVY, BEAT ARMY!”
On September 17, Kennedy was in Congo working for Vectus Global—a private security firm linked to Blackwater’s Erik Prince—when he and his team were ambushed in South Kivu province. This area has a long history of conflict.
During the encounter, Kennedy suffered three gunshot wounds, while reports indicate that at least 20 individuals were either killed or injured. Among the deceased were several Congolese civilians and a former member of New Zealand’s Special Forces.
A local security source mentioned to reporters that villagers nearby likely comprised some of the casualties. Kennedy was evacuated from Congo, but details regarding the full extent of his injuries are still unclear.
Although Kennedy has yet to make a public statement regarding the ambush or his ongoing recovery, he did share a personal reflection on parenthood on social media as recently as September 25.
It remains unverified who exactly orchestrated the ambush, though Congolese government intelligence suggested that Rwandan troops, allegedly supporting the M23 rebel group, may have located Kennedy’s team through surveillance tactics.
Rwanda has consistently denied these allegations, despite ongoing accusations from Western nations and the United Nations. The conflict reignited in early 2025 as M23 rebels made tactical advances in eastern Congo, an area rich in valuable minerals like tantalum and gold.
Last year, the Congolese government enlisted Vectus Global to assist with tax collection and combat mineral smuggling, and the firm’s role has since expanded to include military engagements.
In the lead-up to the ambush, Vectus personnel, utilizing drones, provided support in ongoing operations to reclaim territory from M23 forces. This ambush marked a tragic point, as it led to the deaths of Vectus contractors, the first known instances in Congo, according to reports.
The situation has garnered attention within the MMA community, with figures like UFC CEO Dana White sharing their hopes for Kennedy’s speedy recovery. White, reflecting on the challenges Kennedy faces, emphasized his well-wishes.
Former UFC champion Anderson Silva also expressed his sorrow over the ambush, sending prayers and positive thoughts to Kennedy and his family.
With Kennedy’s martial arts experience and background, having served as a Green Beret and fighting professionally in notable organizations, the community’s support is palpable as they rally around him during this difficult time.
