Minnesota Governor Tim Walz Addresses Fraud Claims on Kimmel’s Show
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz recently appeared on Jimmy Kimmel’s talk show, where he brushed off the state’s ongoing fraud scandal, suggesting it’s merely a ploy by Republicans to vilify immigrant communities.
Kimmel probed, mentioning, “There were multiple incidents of benefit fraud going on.” He asked Walz if it took him long to uncover such issues. Walz firmly responded that it didn’t take long at all, redirecting the conversation to former President Donald Trump, stating, “It’s happening in other states. We were going to turn back — many of these people were indicted in 2021. He used that as an excuse, because it was a perfect act to say there was fraud. Just imagine, from this guy’s point of view, he would know where the fraud was.”
Kimmel didn’t hold back, labeling Trump a “Sigmund conman.”
Walz went on to denounce the attacks against the immigrant community, particularly the Somali population. He highlighted, “We’re a generous state. We also contribute more than we receive to support ‘red’ states that don’t support their people.” He accused wealthy individuals of undermining beneficial programs, adding, “But thankfully, the people of Minnesota showed courage and pushed back.”
The White House has yet to respond to a request for comments regarding Walz’s statements.
In recent years, a significant fraud operation has been uncovered in Minnesota, affecting programs like Medicaid and “Feeding Our Future.” Reports from federal authorities suggest that the fraud could surpass $9 billion, although Walz and others dispute this figure.
Kimmel also questioned whether the scandal influenced Walz’s decision to not seek re-election. Walz replied, “No. For me, look, two terms would be enough. I think we’ve had enough people building their careers here.” He reflected on a challenging year for Minnesota and spoke of his partnership with Melissa Hortman, who had faced tragedy.
He emphasized the importance of securing a seat with a progressive Democrat, noting, “There’s a lot that went into that, and I think there’s other things I could add.”
