Time to Designate Russia a State Sponsor of Terrorism

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said Sunday on CBS’ “Face the Nation” that following the death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, it’s time to designate Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism. Ta.

A partial transcription follows:

GRAHAM: When it comes to what happened with Mr. Navalny in Russia, Mr. Navalny was one of the bravest people I’ve ever met. When he returned to Russia, he had to prepare to be killed by President Putin. And he was killed by President Putin. So, what, why not do this? I just got off the phone with two Democratic senators. Let’s make Russia a state sponsor of terrorism under US law. Let’s make them pay for Navalny’s murder. This would allow the Navalny family to go to a US court and sue Putin’s Russia for killing his loved one. The state-sponsored terrorist designation is a game-changer. That would open the door to further sanctions and a U.S. tribunal. I’ve been pushing this for a year.

Robert Costa: Is there going to be legislation on that this week?

Graham: Yes, of course. President Biden told President Putin that if anything happens to Mr. Navalny, he will pay the price. President Biden, I agree with you. The price they will have to pay is to make Russia a state sponsor of terrorism like Iran, Cuba, and North Korea. They deserve this title. President Putin has been killing citizens and opposition leaders for decades. He dismantled Syria. He’s one of the worst actors in the world.
