Tom Cruise's space film project canceled due to Trump's NASA collaboration

Tom Cruise’s Space Movie Stalled Due to Political Concerns

Tom Cruise, known for his role in “Top Gun: Maverick,” didn’t manage to launch his anticipated space film because he was hesitant about involving President Donald Trump in discussions with NASA, according to Page Six.

A source shared that the project, initially revealed in 2020, hit a roadblock due to differences between Cruise and Trump. It seems that Cruise, perhaps, wasn’t keen on asking for a favor from the former president, which he would have needed to secure the necessary coordination with NASA.

“It would have taken permission from the federal government,” the source explained, indicating that this was a significant barrier to the film’s progress.

Back in 2020, Cruise mentioned his plans to partner with “Edge of Tomorrow” director Doug Liman to create a movie, part of which would be filmed in space. Reports suggested that the actor was genuinely aiming for a production that would take place aboard a spacecraft, leading to excitement when NASA confirmed his involvement after the news broke.

The project aimed to collaborate with SpaceX, which would require approval from NASA, then under Trump’s administration. NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine had previously stated that the agency could assist with filming and offer access to the International Space Station.

Despite high hopes, the film never progressed. It seems Cruise preferred to steer clear of political issues altogether. Bridenstine even expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration in a now-deleted post, hoping it would inspire future engineers and scientists.

While Cruise has generally kept his political beliefs under wraps, reports resurfaced recently about him declining a Kennedy Center honor from Trump, citing “scheduling conflicts.” This, of course, stirred quite the conversation.

Neither Cruise’s representatives nor the White House have commented on these developments yet.
