Tow truck driver in Los Angeles faces theft charges for towing ICE vehicle

The tow truck driver in Los Angeles is confronting federal charges after towing an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) vehicle on August 15, which could land him a decade in prison if found guilty.

According to the charges, Bobby Nunes allegedly took the tow while laughing at the scene. An ICE agent, in the midst of making arrests, activated the emergency lights on his vehicle as he attempted to box in Nunes’ tow truck to stop any potential escape.

Bill Essay, a U.S. attorney, commented on social media, suggesting that Nunes may find it amusing to disrupt immigration enforcement efforts—until possibly facing a lengthy prison sentence.

Additionally, it is alleged that Nunes used the door of another vehicle to confront an officer during the incident. A video circulating on TikTok showcased a chaotic scene where illegal immigrants were being apprehended while officers pursued the tow truck on foot, which helped authorities eventually locate Nunes.

The complaint was reviewed and approved by U.S. Magistrate Judge Stephanie Christensen.

In related news, tensions in Los Angeles are palpable as a judge recently noted he doesn’t have the jurisdiction to send in the National Guard to restrain anti-ICE protests. This comes amid ongoing discussions about the legality of militarization against protests.

Meanwhile, the Department of Homeland Security reported a staggering rise in attacks against ICE agents, marking a 1,000% increase since last year. They emphasized the need to continue enforcing the law despite the violence faced.
