New Jersey Candidate’s Unique Town Hall Stunt
A man campaigning for a committee seat in a New Jersey town pulled off an unusual stunt at a town hall meeting. Will Tilly unexpectedly broke into a somewhat messy breakdance before addressing the crowd about tax increases.
During the meeting, Tilly stopped short of the podium and began his routine, leaving onlookers a bit puzzled. Some attendees tried to stifle their laughter, while others looked away, unsure of how to react.
He spun and twirled for nearly a minute, his shoes scraping against the floor, before finally making his way to the podium—out of breath and perhaps a little frustrated, he grabbed some water and his speech notes.
When he began to speak, Tilly made small talk about his recent trip to Monterrey, Mexico. He remarked, “There’s no pizza there… but it’s a charming place with a lot of history. Is anyone here nervous about flying?” His questions were met with silence, and he even asked his mother if anyone wanted to see him do a backspin.
Attempting to lighten the mood, he spun on the ground but didn’t elicit any applause from the crowd, which seemed unimpressed. Eventually, he looked directly at the town officials and asked, “Why have our taxes increased so much?”
Tilly has been vocal about local tax issues as part of his campaign for the Cranford Township Committee, advocating for developers to contribute fairly to the community. He referenced a recent town decision to allocate $55 million for local schools, suggesting a lack of contribution from developers to the education system really isn’t acceptable.
He continued, questioning whether the public was aware of the extra costs associated with the school funding that hadn’t been fully disclosed during the referendum vote. Tilly highlighted that his taxes had climbed by approximately $900, which residents were told was related to school expenses.
Wrapping up his rather unconventional presentation, Tilly moonwalked away in silence. His earlier town hall appearances had featured similar attempts to engage wealthy developers and encourage community solidarity among attendees.
He expressed that his spontaneous dance was meant to foster a sense of friendship and equality among residents and officials.
