Toyota tells owners of 50,000 cars not to drive due to Takata air bags

Toyota is asking owners of 50,000 cars not to drive their vehicles, citing problems with airbags that can cause “serious injury or death.”

The airbags in the affected vehicles are “subject to an emergency airbag safety recall” because they are “involved in the Takata airbag recall,” the automaker said Thursday in a “do not drive” advisory. .

Toyota says that if an airbag were to deploy, the driver or passenger of an affected vehicle could be seriously injured or killed because the vehicle has parts that are “likely to explode and scatter sharp metal fragments.” He said there is a possibility.

“Owners should not drive these vehicles until the safety recall is repaired free of charge,” Toyota said in a statement.

Toyota recalls 1 million vehicles in the U.S. over short circuit concerns

This warning applies to some 2003-2004 model year Corolla and Corolla Matrix vehicles and 2004-2005 model year RAV4 vehicles equipped with Takata airbag inflators.

Safety issues with Takata’s airbag inflators have also affected other automakers. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, approximately 67 million Takata airbags have been recalled in the United States.

According to the agency, 27 people have died and at least 400 have been injured in the United States due to defective inflators.

Toyota says owners should contact their local dealer to schedule a free repair or replacement without the driver operating the affected vehicle.
