Former Rep. Mia Love (Utah), the first black Republican woman to be elected to Congress, has passed away at the age of 49.
“I want you to know that she passed away peacefully today, surrounded by her grateful family,” her family said.
Love, who was treated for brain tumors, was part of an immunotherapy clinical trial at Duke University’s Brain Tumor Center.
Her daughter, Abigail, shared earlier this month that her mother’s cancer had not responded to treatment and was progressing. They then shifted their focus to spending quality time together.
“We are grateful for the many good wishes, prayers, and awareness of pathos,” Love’s family said. “We are spending our time as a family and will provide information on funeral services and her life’s disclosure in the future.”
Ai was diagnosed with glioblastoma in 2022 and lived for 15 months.
The daughter of Haitian immigrants, Love was elected to the House of Representatives in 2014 and served two terms.
In 2016, Love became one of the few Republicans who did not support Donald Trump at the time.
She lost a small seat to Salt Lake City Mayor Ben McAdams (D) in 2018 before joining CNN as a commentator.
Trump eventually supported her in his 2024 campaign, according to Love’s tweet.
