Restrictions on transgender athletes will be tightened at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics amid controversy over their superiority over women.
The new restrictions will require transgender people to have a new gender identity before they turn 12, meaning other transgender athletes who may have wanted to compete in this year's tournament will be excluded. For example, in 2021, New Zealand's Laurel Hubbard competed in the women's weightlifting competition at the age of 43, making her the oldest athlete of that year.

Previously, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) issued guidelines allowing transgender athletes to compete as women if their testosterone levels were less than 10 nanomoles per liter for at least 12 months before their first competition. Ta. However, the current requirements have been changed to avoid disadvantaging cisgender women.
In March, track and field's governing body, the World Athletics Council, banned athletes who passed puberty before moving on from high-level women's competition. Following this decision, in 2022, the international swimming federation FINA (now World Aquatics) will only allow trans swimmers who converted before the age of 12 to compete.
The World Athletics Council has expressed “the overriding need to protect the women's category”, according to its president Sebastian Coe, a two-time Olympic champion (1980 and 1984).
The Olympics have come under increasing pressure in recent years to reform rules regarding transgender athletes, with women rallying to demand fairness due to the dominance of biological males.
