Munroe Bergdorf Speaks on Transphobia and Society
Transgender model Munroe Bergdorf has made some strong statements, suggesting that “fascism is here” as part of a broader discussion on transphobia. During a recent speech, she expressed concerns about the current societal climate, saying, “We find ourselves in a very anxious and uncertain time in our history.” She then emphasized that we can no longer just discuss the idea of fascism—it has arrived.
Bergdorf elaborated, stating, “It’s up to all of us to keep each other safe. It’s not just about protecting the dolls; it’s about supporting one another.” The phrase “Save the Dolls” is a rallying cry used by some transgender activists, urging society to defend transgender individuals from potential harm.
She argued that the supposed “demonization” of those living as the opposite sex creates a divide, isolating trans women from cisgender women and the larger community. This isolation, she believes, can stifle public engagement with the trans community.
In her talk, she stated, “It’s our collective responsibility to ensure safety for each other. ProtectTheDolls is important, but mutual protection is crucial as well.”
The term “cis” refers to individuals who identify as their assigned sex at birth, and it’s commonly used when discussing gender identity within a broader social context.
Bergdorf also claimed that those who engage in transphobic behaviors are inherently vulnerable. “The violence that we tolerate is violence we all condemn,” she stated, urging listeners to act as protectors for one another whenever they witness such behavior.
This is not the first instance of Bergdorf expressing controversial views. In 2017, she faced backlash after being dismissed by L’Oréal for comments made on Facebook, where she described white individuals as “the most violent and oppressive force of nature on earth.” She suggested that their privilege and success result from systemic oppression of people of color.
