Transplant donor wakes up on operating table as doctors prepare to remove his heart in nightmare scenario: witnesses

A nightmarish scenario unfolded in a Kentucky hospital where a transplant donor woke up on the operating table just as doctors were preparing to remove his heart, witnesses said. .

Thomas T.J. Huber was taken to Baptist Health Richmond Hospital in Kentucky in October 2021 after suffering a drug overdose. Doctors declared him brain dead and began tests to see if his organs were worthy of removal. NPR reported.

Natasha Miller was among those tasked with organ preservation at Baptist Health Richmond Hospital that day. She told the magazine that Huber, 36, appeared to be still alive when nurses wheeled him into the room in a wheelchair.

“He was moving around, like he was flopping around,” Miller told NPR. “And when we got there, we saw him in tears. He was visibly crying.”

His condition shocked several people in the operating room, causing the two doctors who performed the surgery to refuse to participate in the operation.

Most disgusting of all, Miller said she heard a case coordinator at the Kentucky Organ Donation Affiliate callously demand that new doctors perform unethical procedures.

“So, the coordinator calls the supervisor at the time, and she says he needs to 'find another doctor to take on it,' which means 'we're going to take on this case.' she said. She needs to find someone else,” Miller told the outlet.

Another KODA official said he made a shocking discovery while reviewing Hoover's case. Nicoletta Martin says she was shocked to learn that her donor had previously shown signs of life when they examined him to see if he was suitable for a transplant.

“The donor woke up that morning in surgery for a cardiac catheterization, and he was thrashing around on the table,” Martin says. According to docket records, the Hippocratic Oathists only sedated the struggling Hoover as he stood up, and proceeded with plans to harvest his organs.

As a result of this incident, several members of the KODA team resigned from their positions.

“I've dedicated my entire life to organ donation and transplantation, and it's so important to me right now that this is allowed to happen and there are no more protections for donors,” Martin told NPR. It's scary,” he said.

Hoover's sister said the overdose victim opened his eyes as he was being wheeled from the intensive care unit to the operating room, but the movement was a reflex and showed that Hoover was still alive. He was told that this was not what he meant.

“It was like his way of letting us know, 'I'm still here,'” Donna Lawler, Hoover's sister and current guardian, told NPR.

KODA officials denied that members of the organization had instructed doctors to proceed with surgeries to remove organs from living patients.

The Kentucky Attorney General's Office said investigators are reviewing the matter.

The Federal Reserve's Health Resources and Services Administration is also investigating the allegations.

Hoover survived and now lives with his sister. Although he has made an amazing recovery, he still has some problems with memory, walking and speaking.
