Transportation Efforts to Alleviate D.C. Traffic

The Trump Administration is taking steps to alleviate severe traffic congestion impacting the Maryland and Washington, D.C. corridor, which has been ranked as the worst in the nation for traffic in 2025. Commuters in this region are enduring an average of over six hours of gridlock each day, significantly disrupting their daily routines.

As part of the initiative, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy plans to meet with Maryland Governor Wes Moore to discuss concerns regarding key infrastructure projects. One of the major issues on the table is the reconstruction of Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge, which collapsed in March 2024 after a cargo vessel hit it.

“The Trump Administration is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for Americans and initiating a new Golden Age of Transportation,” Secretary Duffy stated.

He further stressed the importance of holding leaders accountable at all government levels to ensure that taxpayer dollars are utilized effectively and lead to real improvements for the public.

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is also seeking feedback from the public on ways to expedite the reconstruction of the American Legion Memorial Bridge, which officials believe is crucial in addressing the area’s escalating traffic issues.

In its Request for Information (RFI), the FHWA highlighted that ongoing congestion is negatively affecting daily life for commuters and creating costly delays for commercial traffic, hindering the flow of goods throughout the corridor.

“As a key connector, the severe congestion on the Bridge and its approaches impacts the everyday lives of travelers and induces additional costs and delays for businesses,” the request noted.

“Local commuters often find it a daily challenge to cross the American Legion Memorial Bridge, necessitating extra time for their journeys while confronting unpredictable delays and safety obstacles.”

The RFI also pointed out that the congestion influences not just local workers but also federal and military personnel, as well as tourists and international drivers.

Truck drivers face similar difficulties, leading to delays in freight transport and placing a financial strain on companies, alongside causing undue wear on their vehicles.

“On the freight side, both short-haul and long-haul deliveries are hindered by traffic, resulting in delays and added stress for drivers and equipment, along with safety concerns posed by competing traffic,” explained the statement.

FHWA Administrator Sean McMaster criticized Governor Moore for the delays, which he claims are hampering much-needed enhancements in this crucial transportation corridor.

“Governor Moore’s inaction regarding the American Legion Bridge corridor is obstructing advancements on one of the nation’s most vital transportation routes,” McMaster stated. “That’s why the Trump Administration is looking for public input to revive the multi-state plan aimed at reducing congestion on both the Virginia and Maryland sides.”
