Travel Portland challenges Trump's remarks and highlights the city's safety for visitors.

Travel Portland Addresses Safety Concerns

Travel Portland recently updated its “Safe Portland” page, aiming to reassure potential visitors about the city’s safety. They have pushed back against President Trump’s recent claims regarding the city, labeling them as “not true.” This move is part of an effort to attract more travelers.

On its website, the group stated, “President Trump’s recent comments about Portland are untrue and do not reflect the experience that visitors to our city should expect.”

The organization also pointed out that the city’s ICE facilities are situated in “isolated areas” about three miles from downtown and the main tourist spots.

Protests Impacting the Area

The website addresses the ongoing protests, noting that Portland residents have historically exercised their right to free speech. Some demonstrators have gathered at the federal ICE facility in South Portland to voice their concerns over the agency’s practices.

Anti-ICE protests, which began in June, have resulted in several arrests this month—specifically, seven individuals have faced charges like disturbing the peace and assault.

Despite the unrest, Travel Portland characterized the protests as “relatively small and generally peaceful.” They added, “Portland is a safe place to visit and, like any major city, people should use caution when walking around it.”

A spokesperson for Travel Portland mentioned that the information on the page serves to clarify any misgivings about safety, saying, “Other than that, Travel Portland has no further comment beyond what is stated on the page.”

“As with any major city, we recommend caution when exploring.”

Fox News Digital has reached out to the White House for further comments. A spokesperson said, “This summer, rioters in Portland have been charged with crimes including arson and assaulting police officers.” The spokesperson contrasted claims of peaceful protests on the left with accusations of extreme violence in the city.

They added that, “Last month, Antifa extremists brought a guillotine to an ICE facility in Portland.” This situation has prompted President Trump to assert that he is taking legal steps to protect federal law enforcement and address the violence that local residents have reported.

Current Crime Statistics

According to a report by the Metropolitan Mayors Association, there was a decrease in murders, rapes, and robberies last year, while aggravated assaults saw an uptick. The Portland Police Bureau mentioned in its Crime Reduction Plan that while violent crime is declining, it still remains at historically high levels.

Travel Portland, a nonprofit funded primarily by local lodging taxes, pointed out that the city imposes a 13% fee on hotel stays. Of the taxes collected, part goes to fund its tourism initiatives and contributes to the Oregon Tourism Commission as well.

The organization also emphasized its safety resources, highlighting that public transportation, like the TriMet bus system, has on-site safety teams to manage any issues.

In September 2023, the city established a hotel security zone to boost safety within key hospitality areas, implementing patrols from 3 PM to 2:30 AM daily, along with a 24/7 Public Safety Coordinator for certain events.

While they aim to invite travelers to explore, they also made mention of potential challenges, such as wildfires due to extreme weather and possible business closures during winter snowfalls.

According to a report, Portland saw over 12 million visitors in 2024, reflecting its appeal despite ongoing tensions.

Under the city’s sanctuary policy, city employees, including police, are not involved in enforcing federal immigration laws. The overarching state law is similar in that it prohibits local law enforcement from participating in immigration enforcement without a warrant.

President Trump, however, has described Portland as “war-torn,” claiming that federal facilities, including ICE sites, face threats from Antifa and other groups. The ICE facility has become a major focal point in Trump’s efforts against illegal immigration, with protesters reportedly breaking into the facility several times.
