As stories about swapping airplane seats circulate online, one traveler turned a frustrating situation into some extra cash. A passenger on a flight from Tampa to New York City shared on the “R/Delta” forum how they were asked to move to a middle seat in exchange for $100.
The traveler, who prefers the aisle, recounted an encounter with a fellow passenger a few rows ahead. This person had a girlfriend seated next to the traveler and was unable to change their seating at check-in. He reportedly offered, “He offered me $100 (all in $20 bills) to switch with him. Sit in the middle seat for $100.00, which is usually a 2.5-hour flight—I decided to go for it.”
The poster wrapped up by stating, “If someone hands me cash for a flight, I’m in.”
Commenters on Reddit joined in to discuss the ethics of seat swapping. One user emphasized, “This is how you utilize a swap sheet,” while another quipped that at least the guy gave something instead of trying to guilt-trip them.
Many users voiced their opinions on the fairness of such transactions. One remarked, “Airlines price seats differently, so passengers could too. It’s a win-win transaction for both parties.” A woman chimed in with a similar experience, saying, “I was offered $100 to sit next to my husband.”
Someone else noted, “I probably would have told him to keep the cash, but that seems like a fair exchange,” highlighting the awkwardness of middle seats, especially for taller individuals.
A Redditor summarized by stating, “This approach is a reasonable way to ask someone to change seats,” while another emphasized the value of offering something in return for the swap. Travel experts also recommend that providing cash or gifts is a polite way to make such requests.
Gary Leff, a travel industry expert, advised that having a legitimate reason when asking to swap seats could help persuade others. He noted, “If you’re asking for an exchange, it’s only fair to offer something in return.” The general sentiment was that offering value, whether it’s cash or something else, can lead to better outcomes in these situations.
