Customs Seizes Rare Wildlife in Mumbai Airport

Customs officials in Mumbai have detained an air traveler on suspicion of concealing various rare wildlife species, including venomous snakes, within his checked baggage.

The arrest took place on Sunday at Mumbai International Airport, where authorities discovered 44 Indonesian pit vipers, horned vipers with spider tails, and five Asian leaf turtles. The individual had arrived from Thailand.

Pictures shared by the authorities show pit vipers slithering in glass containers, alongside an image of two spider-tailed horned vipers, one locking eyes with the camera.

It appears the man lacked the necessary permits to import such animals, as several species are legally prohibited from entering India, particularly those that are endangered or protected I think this is a significant concern.

The spider-tailed horned vipers are listed as protected species under the International Trade Treaty on Endangered Species. Interestingly, one specimen has resided in Chicago’s Outdoor Natural History Museum for 35 years, showcasing a unique tail appearance that resembles a spider’s jointed leg.

Additionally, scientists have reported on the complexities surrounding these serpentine creatures. It was only in 2003 that another similar species was identified, originating from Iran. A notable observation in 2015 revealed how a wild Iranian snake used its distinct tail to attract unsuspecting birds.

The CITES also categorizes Asian leaf turtles as protected. Rare accounts document these turtles in Southeast Asia, shedding light on their conservation status.

While Indonesian pit vipers are generally green, customs officials have noted some of the encountered snakes exhibit a stunning blue color. This hue, while beautiful, serves as a reminder that these creatures should be admired from a distance; they’re not pets, and interactions could be dangerous.
