Treasury Department Plans $250 Bill Featuring Trump for 250th Anniversary
The Treasury Department is gearing up to create a $250 bill adorned with President Donald Trump’s image to mark the nation’s 250th anniversary. However, this initiative hinges on Congress amending a federal law that currently prohibits living individuals from being depicted on U.S. currency.
“Everything depends on the Capitol. At the Treasury, we’ve been preparing just in case the bill is passed, but, of course, we’ll follow the law,” Treasury representative Scott Bessent stated.
If lawmakers manage to change the relevant law, it would be the first time a living person is featured on a U.S. banknote. Meanwhile, opposition among Democratic lawmakers to this proposal is growing, with many voicing their disapproval of President Trump’s likeness on the new bill.
A Treasury spokesperson explained, “In response to the aggressive legislation sponsored by Congressman Joe Wilson, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) is undertaking necessary planning and due diligence. If the bill is finalized, BEP is committed to issuing a $250 commemorative note to honor our nation’s milestone.”
Rep. Joe Wilson from South Carolina, a staunch supporter of Trump, introduced the proposal in February 2025. His intention, besides celebrating America’s birthday in July, was also to challenge the economic policies under the Biden administration. The bill currently sits with the House Financial Services Committee.
As it stands, the Federal Reserve issues only seven denominations of currency: $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100. Recently, Rep. Andy Barr from Kentucky shared a mockup of the proposed bill online, highlighting its patriotic red, white, and blue design.
During a press conference, Bessent reemphasized the Treasury’s obligations concerning U.S. currency, stating, “At the Treasury, we prepare for what could happen. But we must comply with the existing law.”
Democrats quickly took to social media to criticize the initiative. They argue the focus should be on the 250th anniversary itself rather than on Trump’s personal legacy. “By the end of Trump’s term, there might only be enough for a gallon of gas and a dozen eggs,” commented former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
Democratic Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries echoed similar sentiments, asserting, “A firm no to Trump’s $250 bill. We need to remember that this Fourth of July celebration is about America’s journey, not about a wannabe monarch.”
Senator Mark Warner also added, “While regular Americans face rising living costs, Trump seems preoccupied with trying to boost his self-image instead of focusing on what really matters—lowering prices for families in need.”
Events and projects related to the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary are seemingly under increasing critique, not just this bill. A recent commentary highlighted what they view as misplaced priorities among House Republicans.
The Treasury has stated that both Trump’s and Bessent’s signatures will appear on forthcoming U.S. banknotes as part of the 250th anniversary commemoration.
